Releasing Expectations: Discover Inner Freedom by Letting Go

From NKO Yoga’s July Newsletter

Pregnancy is often painted as a time of glowing joy—but beneath the surface, many expectant mothers carry a quiet weight: the pressure to do everything “right.” From birth plans to body image, from unsolicited advice to internalized ideals, the journey can feel like a tightrope walk between control and surrender.

Prenatal yoga offers a sacred space to soften those edges. On the mat, we learn to breathe through discomfort, to meet ourselves where we are, and to release the grip of perfection. Letting go isn’t giving up—it’s making room. Room for intuition. Room for trust. Room for the messy, miraculous unfolding of motherhood.
This month, we explore ways to practice yoga that can help us shed expectations and find freedom in simply being. By releasing expectations of the ideal, you come closer to your truth and to your true self.  Don’t be afraid. Allow this path of life to unfold a new part of you.  Be open to release other parts of your life which are no longer a priority, and remember it’s ok to change.

Practice: Breath of Surrender (3-Minute Letting Go Ritual)

Find a comfortable seat or lie on your side with support. Close your eyes and bring one hand to your heart, the other to your belly.
Inhale slowly through your nose for a count of 4, feeling your belly rise.
Exhale gently through your mouth for a count of 6, imagining tension melting away.
With each exhale, silently repeat: “I release what I cannot control.”
Continue for 3–5 rounds, or as long as it feels nourishing. Let your breath be your anchor, your reminder that you are already enough.

Journaling Prompt:

Take a few quiet moments to reflect on the following:

“What expectations am I holding onto that no longer serve me? What would it feel like to let them go?”
You might write a letter to yourself, or simply list the things you’re ready to release. There’s no right way—just your truth, unfolding.
